​Richards previous achievements include: the introduction of the first UK bachelors degree in hospitality management in Kolkata (then, Calcutta), India, in 1995; the development of a B.A. Hospitality Management by open learning, which was offered in the UK and to contractual cohorts in Hong Kong and Israel; the development of advanced entry pathways in a variety of management subjects with 2-year institutions in Europe; the development of a new  International undergraduate course within the Aberdeen Business School portfolio; as the European Co-ordinator for the Faculty of Management and then revising and developing the partner network, Richard managed the Erasmus and study abroad programmes at ABS since 2006, and to 2016, increased outward student mobility more than 800%.  Staff participation in international activity also significantly increased; he initiated and organised the inaugural ABS International week and further developing this into a regular event; He lead the development of a validated course for off-shore delivery with a partner institution in Switzerland.  He successfully gained EU funding of €440,000 for an Atlantis transatlantic double degree project with Oklahoma State University and Turku University of Applied Sciences in Finland; He initiated and undertook a faculty-wide project to develop advanced entry pathways to undergraduate programmes for students of U.S. and Canadian community colleges, gaining more than 50 partner colleges.  He facilitated a contractual collaboration to offer a Scottish Masters Programme in International Business in Orlando Florida on a Fly-in Faculty model. He also developed summer programmes to encourage incoming international students to return to the university to complete full-time courses.
